Leave of absence

Types of absence
  • Regular leave: for personal reasons, illness, or other unavoidable circumstances (requires a medical certificate for illnesses lasting more than 29 days)
  • Military service leave: for students enlisting in the military upon receiving enlistment orders
  • Entrepreneurship leave: for entrepreneurial activities (requires prior inquiry with the Entrepreneurship Support Center)
  • Leave of Absence for Pregnancy/Childbirth/Childcare: Leave due to pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare.
Leave of absence application
  • Regular leave of absence: available only to students who have paid tuition, within one-fourth of the class days (possible to apply for leave of absence without paying tuition during the initial registration period)
  • Military service leave of absence: can be requested at any time upon submitting the enlistment notice (after the initial registration period, military service leave is only available to students who have paid tuition; failure to pay tuition will result in dismissal)
  • Entrepreneurship leave of absence: please contact the Entrepreneurship Support Team separately (refer to the entrepreneurship announcement on the website)

    Since evaluation and approval are required, it must be done before the general leave of absence application period.

    Additional applications outside the designated period are not allowed.

  • Leave of Absence for Pregnancy/Childbirth/Childcare: Submission of a confirmation of pregnancy/childbirth and a family relationship certificate (or a copy of the resident registration)
Duration of absence
  • Regular leave of absence: up to 1 year (2 semesters) at a time, within a total of 3 years (6 semesters), and up to 2 years (4 semesters) for transfer students
  • Military leave of absence: from the semester in which the enlistment date falls, to the semester in which the discharge date falls [if the reason for military leave (cancellation of enlistment, postponement of enlistment date, return action, etc.) is canceled, it must be reported to the university within 7 days]

    When extending the leave of absence period, apply for the extension one month before the leave period expires.

  • Entrepreneurship leave of absence: 1 year (2 semesters) per time, within a total of 2 years (4 semesters)
  • Leave of Absence for Pregnancy/Childbirth/Childcare: · Up to 2 years (4 semesters) if necessary due to pregnancy, childbirth, or childcare for female students. · Up to 1 year (2 semesters) if necessary due to childcare for male students.
Leave of absence procedure
  • Apply through the IRUNet (http://wise.uos.ac.kr)

    For military leave, submit supporting documents (enlistment notice, military service confirmation, etc.) 

    For entrepreneurship leave, submit the application form and supporting documents (business registration, business plan, sales proof, other documents necessary to verify entrepreneurial activities, etc.) to the department (major) office.

Leave of absence restrictions
  • New and transfer students cannot take a leave of absence during the first 2 semesters after admission. [If the reason for military leave (cancellation of enlistment, postponement of enlistment date, return action, etc.) is canceled, it must be reported to the university within 7 days.]
  • For a leave of absence due to pregnancy/childbirth/childcare, please submit a confirmation of pregnancy/childbirth and a family relationship certificate (or a copy of the resident registration).

Return to school

Application for return to school
  • Return-to-school application must be submitted before returning to school for the semester in which the leave of absence expires.

    You may be expelled if you do not return to school by the deadline.

  • Military leave students can only reinstate within the semester if their discharge date is within one-fourth of the semester's total class days.
Return to school procedure
  • For students who have not paid their tuition fees at the time of leave of absence:
    Apply via the IRUNet (wise.uos.ac.kr) ⇒ Course Registration ⇒ Print Tuition Invoice ⇒ Pay Tuition Fees
  • Students who paid tuition during the leave of absence:
    Apply for return-to-school via the UOS portal (wise.uos.ac.kr) → Course registration

    For students taking a leave of absence due to military enlistment, please submit supporting documents such as a discharge certificate, a certificate of expected discharge, a military service certificate, or a resident registration abstract with military service details
